Frequently Asked Questions

Mammography involves compressing the breast between two plates, which may cause temporary discomfort for some women. The compression lasts only a few seconds per image and is necessary to get clear images with minimal radiation. Discomfort usually subsides immediately after the compression is released.

The best time for a mammogram is one week after your menstrual period ends, when breasts are least likely to be tender. If you no longer menstruate, you can schedule at any time. Avoid scheduling right before your period when breasts may be more sensitive.

Dense breast tissue is common and normal, but it can make mammograms harder to read. If you have dense breasts, we may recommend additional screening with breast ultrasound. We use digital mammography which is better at imaging dense breast tissue than traditional film mammography.
