Cholesterol Testing

About Cholesterol Testing

Merita Health provides comprehensive cholesterol testing through lipid profile analysis. High cholesterol can be a silent risk factor for heart disease. Our tests evaluate LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels, enabling timely intervention and dietary planning to prevent cardiovascular problems.

Our Cholesterol Tests

  • Total Cholesterol: Overall cholesterol level measurement
  • LDL Cholesterol: "Bad" cholesterol that builds up in arteries
  • HDL Cholesterol: "Good" cholesterol that removes LDL
  • Triglycerides: Type of fat in the blood
  • Non-HDL Cholesterol: All "bad" cholesterol types combined
  • Lipoprotein(a): Genetic risk factor for heart disease

Who Should Get Tested?

We recommend cholesterol testing for:

  • Adults 20+ (baseline test)
  • People with family history of heart disease
  • Individuals with diabetes or hypertension
  • Overweight or obese individuals
  • Smokers
  • Those on cholesterol-lowering medication
  • Men over 45 and women over 55

Frequently Asked Questions

Fasting for 9-12 hours ensures accurate triglyceride measurements, which can be significantly affected by recent food intake. While total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol are relatively stable regardless of fasting, LDL calculations (often derived from formulas) are more accurate with fasting triglyceride levels. Water is allowed during fasting, but avoid coffee, tea, and other beverages.

LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is often called "bad" cholesterol because it carries cholesterol to arteries where it can build up as plaque, increasing heart disease risk. HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is "good" cholesterol because it carries cholesterol away from arteries to the liver for removal. Higher HDL levels are protective, while lower LDL levels are desirable.

Healthy adults should have cholesterol checked every 4-6 years. Those with risk factors (family history, diabetes, hypertension, smoking) should be tested annually. People on cholesterol-lowering medication need testing every 3-12 months to monitor effectiveness. Children with family history of high cholesterol should have their first test between ages 2-10.
